Rodent removal by Pest Cure

Rats and mice are found everywhere around Perth making rodent removal a common issue. Rodent activity will occur all year round but tends to increase during the start of winter to late spring. You will know if there are rats in your roof space because you will hear noises late at night. You may hear scratching, bumping, and squeaking due to the rodent activity in your roof space. Mice sound like rats, rats sound like cats and possums sound like elephants.

Insurance companies have worked out that up to 40 % of unexplained house fires are caused by rats. When rodents chew through the insulation covering the wires a short circuit occurs and sparks happen.

Rodent roof inspections

First, we need to find out exactly what we are dealing with.

We could be dealing with rats or mice. In some suburbs we may be dealing with possums.

Secondly, we look for signs of activity such as droppings, snail shells, and other food sources. There may be palm nuts and sometimes nests found.

There are often rat runs in the insulation. Obvious pathways where rodents make their way.

Rodent removal treatments include:

Mouse and Rat Snap and cage traps

Poison baits (I only use low toxicity baits which are safe for children and pets)

Removal of access points. I look for maintenance issues such as holes in the wall or gaps in the floor

Removal of food sources

Eco-Friendly options are also available

Some useful tips for rodent removal around your place:

  • Cut back any overhanging trees or palm branches near the roof.
  • Pick up fallen fruit and remove palm nuts (rats love to eat these).
  • Remove all garden rubbish.
  • Keep gardens from becoming overgrown.
  • Try and keep fence lines out in the open, overgrowth provides cover for rats.
