There are many types of ants, with two main pest types in Perth.
Outside Ants:
If you have piles of sand in your drive way and multiple nests in your paving you probably have Coastal Brown Ants. These are very difficult to get rid of. The nests can hold tens of thousands of ants and there can be multiple nests. Most people try everything on the shelf in the hardware store before asking for professional help.
Inside Ants:
Ants are looking for food and water with kitchens, bathrooms and toilets places where you often find ants. If your ants are brown they are coming in from the outside of the house.
If they are small and black they are most likely living inside your house.
We use a combination of a non-repellent residual treatment, professional grade ant sand, ant gel baits and granules to get the best results.
Useful ant tips:
- Firstly follow the trail back to their source so you can tell us where they are coming from. Therefore make a note as most times when people call us for ant issues there are no insects around at inspection time.
- Secondly ants like sugary and fatty food. Try keeping sugars, syrups and any thing else ants like to eat in air tight containers. You may also like to try storing these in the fridge.
- Another trick to keep ants away from pet food is to place the bowl in a plate of water.
- Use your own ant treatments. Ants do not like acids, clean up ant trails and bench tops with lemon juice or vinegar to help keep them away.
- If you do not want to use commercial baits or chemicals, another method to try is mixing borax with sugar. The ants will carry the sugar back to the nest where the borax will kill the ants.
- Check the base of your walls. There maybe many nests shown by the piles of ant sand. Around water heaters and air conditioners are also common site for nests.
- Another tip is to fill any gaps or holes that ants are using to gain entry into your home.
